Britney Spears Will NOT Perform At The 2008 MTV VMAs

So says Larry Rudolph
August 25th, 2008

Boo. Very sad Britney Spears news coming out of LA this AM. Ryan Seacrest has just announced live on his morning radio show On Air with Ryan Seacrest on KIIS FM in SoCal that Britney Spears WILL NOT be performing at this year’s 2008 MTV Video Music Awards:

Britney Spears Will Not Perform at MTV VMAs

After a week of a rumored return to the VMA stage, Ryan Seacrest exclusively revealed on his radio show Monday morning that she will not be performing at the awards show. Recently, promotional spots leaked online featuring Spears and show host Russell Brand further fueling the rumors of an on-stage performance. In the spots, Spears and Brand were alone in a large studio only accompanied by a 9,000 lb. elephant.

Ryan essentially reports that he spoke with Britney’s “general in charge of all things Britney Larry Rudolph (via email) about a report that came from E! News that claimed that Britney would be performing at this years’ VMAs. Ryan says that Larry told him that the report is “just wrong”, saying:

“Britney Spears will not be performing at the VMAs this year … I’m telling you officially and unequivocally that BS will not be there.”

Again, I say Boo! I am assuming that Larry Rudolph is referring to the E! report that quoted celebrity hairstylist Kim Vo who claimed he was designing hairstyles for Britney’s VMAs night — one for red carpet, one for the show and one for her PERFORMANCE. Sadly, I’d believe Larry Rudolph over pretty much anyone else … so unless this is a major cover-up to try and pull off a surprise, I guess Britters really won’t be performing this year. I gotta say, I think it’s a mistake for her not to. She is in a much better position to perform this year and, as I’ve said before, she can really undo the damage she did at last year’s VMAs with one amazing performance. I think it’s a bad idea for her not to perform. The end.

Not a surprise for me. Seems like everything that has been coming down the line for Britney lately has been false or one overly-hyped rumor with horrible sources.

  3. Nicola Says:

It’d be hilarious if they said she wasn’t and then she randomly appeared on stage. Surprises are always fun.. like if she’d been rehearsing and was awesome they might do it.

  4. Chuck Says:

Trent, I don’t mean to be rude, but you may “think” this is a bad idea, but you’re NOT Britney. I’m sure she has her reasons. Perhaps she wants to stay away from the things/associations that made her spiral downward. All I’m saying is that she’ll return when she’s ready. You posting “BOO!” all over your blog regarding her choice isn’t really conducive to helping her get or stay better.

  5. CBT Says:

    I’m disappointed :(
What the heck is she rehearsing for then?>

  6. Nicole Says:

im glad shes not. i personally dont think shes quite ready yet. shes doing good & seems happy without being on the stage and everything, so maybe the best idea is to keep her away from it for a lil longer?

  7. Colbi Says:

    NOOOOOOOOO!

  8. Marianne Says:

this might be a wild theory but….maybe MTV is trying to get their VMA ratings/viewership back up by playing the “is she or isn’t she?” game. i know i’ve pretty much been sucked in, hoping to see britney redeem herself, even if they claim she won’t be there. she might show up, right???

  9. [☆F a m o u s☆] Says:

i’m not quite sure why trent wants britney to humiliate herself again. lmfbao

  10. Michelle Says:

Then why is she doing all of those commercials for the VMA’s if “she is not going to be there”?

  11. lindyloo Says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    why???????????
please god let this be a cover up.

I would love to see Britney on stage again…and good this time but its not happening right now =(

i don’t think it’s a bad idea at all. Its still too soon, what is she going to do on the show??? sing one of her singles of her bomb of an album?? its pointless, that album is gone and buried, she needs to just keep focusing on the future and wait untill a new album is developed that she can promote. Otherwise it will just be a performance that will get some attention and then it will be forgotten.

  15. Skippydoo2008 Says:

Chuck… Maybey it’s MTV who won’t let her preform and not Brit’s decsion…..

  16. Ama Says:

Maybe she’s not ready. I mean we are talking about a woman who less than a year ago was running around town talking in a HORRIBLE British accent and was clearly out of her mind.

I’m glad she’s up to public appearances and is getting back to herself, but she needs to take it one step at a time. When her new album is ready to come out and she has some hot new music to promote, I’m looking forward to a Britney performance…but in her own time.

  17. Eva Says:

yea, I gotta disagree with you on that one, Trent. While disappointed, I still think it’s better that she doesn’t perform at the VMAs. She’s doing so well on her road to recovery, and I think she owes a lot of that to staying out of the public eye, more or less, and just kind of hanging back and taking a break. We all expected her performance to be top-notch-awesome last year, so who’s to say it would be better this year? I would hate to see her ruin the progress she’s made by branching out too much too soon, you know? I think it’s best she takes it slow.

  18. julie Says:

Why can’t that girl just stay home for a day or two and focus on getting well? Why does there always have to be another “project” in the pipeline. Surely she has enough money to live on, now that Papa Jamie is reining her in.

  19. nawal Says:

enough of her stayin home! she should get her ass back on that stage and show everyone that shes back! and this time she aint leavin anywhere!

  20. Paz Says:

When I first saw that headline, I thought, Yeah right. MTV and Britney need each other to survive in the industry!
And whoever said MTV wouldn’t want her to perform b/c she bombed so bad–the VMAs arent about quality, they’re about hype and publicity, which is what the Britney debacle gave them.

I am positive she will be performing. It will just be a surprise performance. They’ve pulled a number of these tricks over the years.

  21. Joanne Says:

If she’s not performing then she is NOT READY. Good for her! - there is now too much hype and expectation for her to pull something amazing out of the hat and improve on the last performance.

  22. Chase Says:

Trent, I’m kind of disappointed in you. It seems like everyone is pushing Britney to do this and that but when it comes down to it it is her decision after all. I really don’t think she’s ready. She should wait until she’s fully ready. No point in repeating a disaster like last year. Also, there’s no point in singing a new song from her album if it won’t be out until at least another 5 months!
