Selma Blair Is Kim-possible

Lookin' hawt on the set of the US version of 'Kath & Kim' ... and that's the problem
August 15th, 2008

Here are a couple sexy pics of Selma Blair in her trailer on the backlot of the US version of the show Kath & Kim. Now, I’ve voiced some concerns over the Americanization of the amazingly funny original Aussie version of the show but I’ve generally tried to keep an open mind about the show. These new pics of Selma as Kim are … kinda worrisome:

Yeah, she doesn’t look tragic enough to me. Kim should be a bit more overweight and much more desperate-looking but, again, we prolly shouldn’t judge the US version of the show on mere pictures. I’ve seen a few new promos for the show that have been airing during NBC’s Olympic Games broadcasts and I caught myself laughing a few times so … I guess we’ll still have to wait and see. I just hope that they dumb Selma down a lot for the show … she can pull off the character … I know it. Am I right or is the show just doomed from the start?

She doesn’t look that bad from afar

not to be mean, but i didn’t realize she was that flat-chested….strange.
but believe me, i love selma! she rocks! =]

i really want to check out the original show after hearing so much about it. and i think selma blair can easily dumb down, i don’t know, she just plays it well :)

My first thoughts: “she’s not fat!!!” isn’t Kim supposed to be fat? :(

I would say don’t judge a book (or bikini) by it’s cover. I have complete faith in Selma’s ability to pull the character off, and I think that’s where it can (and hopefully will) be tragic. I know plenty of tragic skinny people.

    ‘a bit MORE overweight’?!
    She’s not overweight at all!

  7. Lissa Says:

Yes, I think it’s doomed. It definitely won’t be as funny

I am a HUGE fan of the original and I hope they air this version in New Zealand so I can see how it compares. A huge part of Kim’s character and the comedy comes from her weight and the sights of her bulging over her clothes and showing her thong. It just won’t be the same having a Slim Kim!

  9. Andrea Says:

Selma Blair can totally play dumb. Just look at Cruel Intentions! Now that was tragic…

  10. Joanne Says:

Maybe that’s the Hollywood version of ‘fat’.

    “‘a bit MORE overweight’?!
She’s not overweight at all!”–> Precisely my thoughts!!

The point is– she’s supposed to look bad.

Even though Kim is a spoiled and self-centered girl, you still genuinely care for her. I’m worried the Americanized version will butcher that somehow.

Im really worried about seeing the american verson of this show. Being an aussie, i love the real version and im not sure its going to have the success. but i guess time will tell.
I cant imagine a kim without the chubby belly!

doomed from the start. the trailers are dreadful. americanised trash. you totally need to check out the originally before this piece of crap comes out so you can see how its supposed to be done.

  15. mimi Says:

i know this sounds bitchy, but americans will not be able to emulate the aussie humour like in the original. the reason why this show is so great is because it totally takes the piss out of bogan aussies! not sure the yanks will pull it off…

I think a huge problem right off the bat is that everyone is comparing the two shows as though they are supposed to be identical. The US version is BASED ON the OZ version, and is not a carbon copy of it. How incredibly boring would that be?! Thusly, Kim isn’t SUPPOSED to be more this or more that. The US Kim could be stick thin and have a hairlip and it could still be hilarious and brilliant in a totally original way. The only thing that has doomed this show’s likability thus far is it’s incessant comparison to the OZ version. If you are watching the US version expecting more of the Aussie-style humor, then you will undoubtedly be disappointed. I am a huge fan of the Australian Kath & Kim, and have seen the entire series (plus Da Kath & Kim Code!) and I loved it. I’m looking forward to a new interpretation of a successful comedy platform.

From the promos and publicity shots I’ve seen, the characters in the US version are hype-realistic caricatures, trying to appear and act so WT that they are cartoonish. Like putting on a pink bikini and adding heart-shaped glasses make Selma Blair so kooky. But the Aussie version’s actors, even in costume and delivering over-the-top dialogue, come off as realistic, almost actual people who are organically quirky. That’s where the US version will for short, in my opinion. The Aussie version is subtle…and does treat its audience as the lowest common denominator.
