NBC Gives ‘Kath & Kim’ A Full Season

A fighting chance
November 2nd, 2008

Good news for fans of the new US version of Kath & Kim … despite getting pulled off the air in Australia after only 2 airings there, Variety reports that NBC has decided to give their version of the Aussie comedy a full season of eps. Kath & Kim are here to stay … at least for the foreseeable future:

NBC’s “Kath & Kim” has become the latest frosh [series] to score a full-season pickup. Peacock announced the back nine order Friday afternoon. Reveille and Universal Media Studios are behind the skein, which stars Molly Shannon and Selma Blair. “Kath & Kim” is based on the Australian laffer of the same name. Peacock has aired four segs so far, averaging a 2.6 rating and 6 share among adults 18-49. Show has also averaged 6 million viewers. “Kath” has retained all of its “My Name is Earl” lead-in in those two measurements, and has built by 4 percent with adults 18-34. In announcing the pickup, NBC Entertainment exec VP Teri Weinberg said the net has “incredible confidence” in the show’s auspices and that NBC believes “it’s a perfect fit with our Thursday night comedies.”

While I admit that I am not totally wowed by the US version of Kath & Kim, I have been tuning in weekly and have been enjoying the show thus far. Again, it’s not as riotously funny as the original but it does provide some good chuckles and manages to keep me coming back for more. This week’s episode was the first ep of the remake to be directly based on one of the original Aussie eps. Based on the original episode Money, this week’s episode was an American re-telling of that ep. I’m not sure if NBC plans to continue basing their eps on old eps but it’s an interesting idea. Additionally, this week’s ep featured an appearance by an actor named Mike Naughton who is a childhood friend of my friend Mark back home in Detroit:

Mike tends to show up randomly in TV shows (like The Office and Friends) and commercials … it is always a treat to see him on TV. It really sounds like NBC has put a lot of faith and money in Kath & Kim and they aren’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. I’ve always said that, with enough time, the show may be able to find its audience. With a full season of eps on the way, that might actually happen. I know I’ll keep watching. Are any of y’all tuning in?

Yeah, it’s not incredibly hilarious, but it’s pretty entertaining :D I just love Selma Blair in this show.

  2. Mandi Says:

So Mikey Day and Naughton together again? Aren’t they the same guys who did the HILARIOUS parody of David Blaine? Search for it on youtube, it’s well worth it.

  3. Alex Says:

Anyone else notice that the promo picture of the show that you have posted here features a bad body double for Selma Blair?

  4. Melinda Says:

This show is growing on me……and to Mandi……..YES!! they are the two guys who participated in that parody of David Blaine! I almost fell off the chair when I realized it was these two!! that is one hell of a funny youtube series!!

Oh that is AWFUL news. I was greatly looking forward to this show after getting hooked on the original Aussie version (Thanks Trent!), but it was soooo disappointing…I prayed to GOD that they would have canned it by now.

If nothing, then for the fact that they closed down the Outback when Trent needed his fix! Haha…..

NO. loyal to the original. so I just watch NOTHING after Earl and before The Office. that’s how I make my statement. grr
and it’s not because I don’t love Molly Shannon - just why remake such a great show?!

  7. Your Sarah Says:

YAY Mike Naughton! Yes, he is 1/3 of the hilarious David Blaine videos. Mark grew up with him since around 2nd grade or something and they still keep in touch. He is also a Groundling and when I saw one of their shows a couple of years ago I almost died laughing my ass off. Wee! Exciting to see him in more stuff. He was also in Elizabethtown with Orlando Bloom & Kirsten Dunst and had a very small part in Superbad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-DOTS6SO9I

    :)

To be honest, I find the show growing more cringeworthy every week and definitely less funny. What keeps me coming back is the curiosity factor and I’m not sure how long that will hold up.

I’m rather surprised NBC has so much faith in it - but to be fair it is still early days so maybe there is better to come - I’m just not gonna hold my breath.

    Yea,

i dig the show….But the 80’s camera fading and the shortness of the laughs concern me. I also havent seen the original so i am sheltered a little. I dont think it’ll last past two. but since its sandwiched between two shows i like, well i’m gonna watch it.

I totally agree with Trent. I am a HUGE fan of the original so the US version will never be as good in my eyes. I didn’t like the show at first. Now it’s growing on me. I wanted Molly to be funnier and she’s getting there. The hair competition had me in stitches. Selma makes a surprisingly funny Kim, I wish she had more of a muffin top and dowager’s hump. For some reason, finding out it takes place in Florida make’s it funnier and makes sense to me. I wish there was a “Sharon” character. Though the latina character that had a bigger role in last weeks show has potential, she’s not sticking it at the moment. Overall, glad to hear NBC is giving it a chance.
