The Obamas & McCains Cast Their Ballots

The Big Day
November 4th, 2008

I gotta tell y’all, I’m having a hard time focusing on anything other than Election Day today. After much contemplation while waiting in line to vote this morning (1 1/2 hours), I’ve decided to chill on the goss and focus primarily on what is going on in the US today. I have never experienced such a feeling of excitement in my country before. While I understand that some of y’all may be sick and tired of all the election talk of the last few days, weeks, months I just can’t get fully into goss mode today. I’m really hoping for record voter turn-out in today’s election so I’m gonna try and do anything I can to inspire folks here in the US to GET OUT AND VOTE. I’ll put up some regular stuff thruout the day but I’m entirely too preoccupied with the election to really focus.

Senators Barack Obama and John MCain (and their wives Michelle and Cindy) made their way out to their polling places this morning to cast their ballots in today’s very important election. The assumption is that each man and his wife did not vote for the other guy but … I guess we can’t be entirely too sure. Here are a few pics of the Obamas and the McCains casting their votes earlier today:

Democrat Barack Obama joined the nation’s earliest voters Tuesday as people around the nation began lining up to cast ballots in a historic election pitting Republican John McCain against the man seeking to become the first black president in U.S. history. “I voted,” Obama said, holding up the validation slip he was handed after turning in a ballot at his Chicago neighborhood’s precinct. Accompanying the Illinois senator for the trip from their home to the polling station were his wife, Michelle, and their two young daughters. He planned a final campaign event in nearby Indiana before speaking to a massive evening rally in Chicago. In Delaware, Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden went to the polls with his elderly mother.

Senator McCain gave a thumbs up sign but ignored questions from reporters as he left the polling station in Phoenix, Arizona. Meanwhile, Sarah Palin told journalists in her home town of Wasilla, Alaska, that she hoped to wake up on Wednesday as the new Vice President of the United States. “We have an optimistic and confident view of what is going to happen today,” she said.

Well, the candidates at least have a couple votes each that they can count in their tally. As the rest of the country votes thru out the day (the first polls close in just 5 hours) the US and the world waits with bated breath.

PS. I like that you are just going to focus on Voting! Who cares about anything other than that today and god knows I need my daily fix of gossip. I will keep that for tomorrow thou!!

  3. Jessica Says:

I can’t get enough of the election either so I am glad you are posting about it. I will try to sneak in some E! News or something while watching the results tonight, but I doubt it.

  4. Judy Says:

I don’t blame you. Brills! I live in Chicago, so on the morning news, they were showing the prep for the Obama rally tonight, I got so choked up. I hope the outcome is in Obama’s favor. The change is needed so very much!

  5. T Says:

Could not agree with you more Trent! GOBAMA! :)

I cannot wait to get off work and go home and veg in front of CNN. I love me some Wolf Blitzer.

  6. Panti Christ Says:

All I can think about is the election today too. I am so anxious to get out of work in a few hours and vote!

  9. Katie Says:

I can’t focus on anything today either! I just can’t wait for the results to be in. I almost got a little teary eyed this morning watching Barack and Michelle casting their ballots. I’m sporting my Obama shirt at work today and hopefully will be wearing it again in 4 years for his reelection campaign!!

    OBAMA 08!!

  10. Zanne Says:

I’m pretty excited about the election too (GObama!) but voting in my district has been less than ideal. My hubby and I regularly have to wait 2+ hrs to vote in a “normal” election so I did an absentee ballot last week. I still waited about 2 hrs to vote last week but I’m so glad I did it then b/c my husband got in line this morning at 4:45am and waited until 7:15am to vote - and there were at least 30 people in front of him! When the polling place opened at 7am, a bunch of people, in front of and behind him, were told they had to get in another line so they had to go to the back of a 2nd line! (I’m surprised a riot didn’t break out!) And one of the college students I work with just got a card on Saturday telling her that her voting place for today had changed. It all sounds a bit shady but I haven’t heard of anyone being outright denied their voting right. This is SC though so I’m sure it will happen sometime today! :p

  11. VV Says:

    Vote! Please!

    (Obama! Obama! Obama!)

  12. Fatima Says:

Yay Trent, I am excited about the election-themed posts for today! I need a little bit of sass in my election updates (= Will be checking in periodically!

  13. Zanne Says:

While I’m complaining about living in SC, can I just mention that election day is not a SC state holiday and that SC state employees are only allowed to take two hours of annual leave to vote? I’m not sure what it’s like in other states but that just doesn’t seem right to me. And policies like that have a trickle down effect on other workers. My son’s daycare had signs posted everywhere asking people to pick their kids up early so the daycare workers could vote too! It’s kind of scary to think that the last daycare worker there gets off only 30 minutes before the polls close - hopefully they’ll all make it!

  14. Nicola Says:

I think some of you are forgetting that…this is Trent’s blog, he can blog about the elections and how much OBAMA MUST WIN FOR THE SAKE OF THE ENTIRE WORLD!!
    I’m not kidding :)

  15. Winona Says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s having a bit of trouble concentrating on the day-to-day right now. What happens today will change the course of history, for better or worse (and I’m hoping for better, and by “better” I mean “Obama”), and it’s nothing short of thrilling to be a part of it! (For the record, I early-voted a couple weeks ago when I took my disabled mother to the polls.)

  16. Natalie Says:

yay! i have all my obama gear on today. im so excited! i cant wait to watch election results tonight.

  17. Amy Says:

I completley understand why a lot of people support Obama. He seems like a really nice guy and represents significant change in American history. But those of us young folks who work for small companies that make just over $250,000 a year (the company, not me lol) are really worried. When taxes are raised, we’ll be the first to go. I must say, I’m scared.

BUT, I’m optimistic and know that everything will turn out okay either way! Go America!

  18. PITNBer Says:

Trent, your captions crack me (the hell) up!

  19. christine Says:

i get so annoyed when people who are half black and half white only identify as black. so many people do it, why? it’s like they aren’t acknowledging the white side and that isn’t cool

  20. Ohmygoshi Says:

Why aren’t the McCain’s names bolded as well? I understand and respect your support for one candidate over the other, but both deserve an equal amount of respect, no?

I sent my ballot in last week.

    I voted NO on FL’s Prop 2.

    I voted for McCain.

I’m hoping for the best, but despite the outcome, I will give my respect and support to the next President. I hope you will do the same, Trent.

  21. wishinchick Says:

    To Christine:

A lot of biracial people who are black and white identify as black because that is what people perceive them to be. Race is a social construct, based upon appearances. Barack could shout till the cows come home about being a white man, but since he doesn’t look that way, people would ignore it.

However, just to be clear, Obama has clearly acknowledged both of the races that he is.Furthermore, since he was raised by his white grandparents, I’m sure that he is not ashamed of being white either.

In other words, let’s focus on getting him elected!

  22. Amy Says:

I agree Christine! I would embrass it!

  23. Panti Christ Says:

Just curious if anyone heard news of our current sitting President voting today? Haven’t seen him lately!

  24. Kendra Says:

Ok..At least now I know to stay off of your site for the rest of the day..I’m way beyond sick of election talk..I have my DVDs of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia ready to go! I think it’s pretty obvious who’s going to win the Presidential election..I don’t need to see coverage all night!

  25. Michelle Says:

    MCCAIN/PALIN 08!!!!!!!!!!! WOO HOO

    To Ohmygosh:
    EXACTLY!
    I agree

and to Amy I feel the same. I’m sorry but his taxes are gonna be the end of a lot of us ):
    I like my money, thanks

  28. blogger Says:

    Amy,
Obama’s plan is not to tax business’ making $250,000.00, it is for business owners taking home $250,000.00 I am a business owner and I hope there is a day I make that kind of money and paying a lousy 3% more in taxes would honestly not make me lose any sleep!

    GO OBAMA!!
