A Real American Hero

Barack Obama comes to save the day
July 31st, 2008

Earlier this week the McCain campaign released a campaign commercial which likened his Democratic rival for the Presidency of the United States of the America, Senator Barack Obama, to celebrities like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears … but it turns out that Sen. Obama is more like Superman or Batman, especially when you consider that the man has made into a sorta superhero in his own comic book:

It’s a year of superheroes in Hollywood, with the big-budget epics of Batman, Iron Man and the Hulk, but a big-budget production out of Washington, D.C., is carving a niche in the animation trend. Presumptive nominees John McCain and Barack Obama will star this fall in their own comic books put out by IDW Publishing, a San Diego-based publisher better known for telling the stories of robots (The Transformers) and vampires (30 Days of Night). Don’t expect Captain America-versus-Superman hijinks or super-villains threatening the electoral process. Trading sound bites for word balloons, the books purport to tell McCain and Obama’s life stories, independently researched and illustrated by a veteran team of writers and artists. “We’re not doing anything that is sensational here,” said IDW special projects editor Scott Dunbier, adding that neither campaign was involved in the development of the books. “We’re sticking to the facts.” On Oct. 8, the books will be released in comic book shops and go on sale online and for reading on cell phones. Comic book biographies have been written before — Marvel Comics had a best-seller in 1982 with a biography of Pope John Paul II. But Dunbier said the company is breaking new ground getting out fully researched comics on two candidates before Election Day. Dunbier said the nontraditional style of storytelling and visuals in comics may reach some voters more effectively than other types of media can. “We’re not in the business of doing textbooks, but I think comic books really do have the great potential to inform and teach and do more than just standard superhero comics,” he said.

I think this is a pretty cool idea … and I suppose it’s very democratic of the comic book company to create comics for both Obama and McCain. The US really could use a hero like Barack Obama :)

BATMAN OR SUPERMAN, is someone smoking crack, hes not cool enough to be THE JOKER, LOL.

  2. Jess Says:

Is so stupid, people go with fads not with facts. It will be the WORST thing that happens to this country.

  3. Shaun Industry Says:

You do know, they’ve done an identical one for John McCain, don’t you? Although, I must say, his image on the front looks a lot less heroic and a lot more like Dr. Doom - and not the sexy Dr. Doom of Julian McMahon.

  4. mrslizmc Says:

If Obama wins, I’m moving to a different country.

  5. Shaun Industry Says:

    mrslizmc,

Good luck on your move… bitch.

  6. Jenny Says:

Obama is underqualified. Try running in ten years after you have a little more experience.
God help us all if he wins.

  7. Your mom Says:

Hey mrslizmc. Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out beyotch!!!!

  8. mew Says:

P.S. global warming is something Al Gore made up and you all who thinks it’s real are followers of the B.S. the celebs/Jesse Jackson tells you. Any of you that talks shiz about the U.S. doesn’t know shiz about shiz! Go to another country and tell me you’d rather be there. And if so…get the fuck outta here!

  9. MLD Says:

The man is not a hero of any sort. I’d love an explanation of the thought process that goes behind that. Can anyone list something this man has accomplished other than stirring up celebrities???

  10. FK Says:

To MLD, yes I can. He led the Illinois senate to UNANIMOUSLY pass a law that required videotaping of police interrogations. Guarding against police brutality is a highly charged political issue, and is very important for the sanctity of our democracy. Only one example. Do a little research and you’ll find more. Also, oh, I don’t know, coming from nowhere to win the Democratic nomination, funded by small donations from citizens and not taking any money from lobbyists. Oh yeah. And being right about the Iraq War before we entered into it at a time when it was considered political suicide to oppose it. Also, to MEW, well, global warming is something that the vast majority of scientists tell us is taking place based on research and evidence. And wouldn’t it be wonderful if all these people who say they’ll leave if Obama becomes president actually do? I don’t know where they’d go, but it sure would be great.

  11. NIK Says:

Really? Since when is Obama a hero? Because his fanatical celebrity following says so? What the hell did he do?

Also, I love his website, It’s all “I will do this…” and “I will do this…” Ummm, you can try. This country has a system of checks and balances. When did Obama become this messiah? He hasn’t proven anything and I don’t think he will prove anything. Not that I give a damn about McCain either.

I agree with FK on this one. If America is SOOOO BAD, then leave.

  12. Jessica Says:

I admit, the people who say, “I’M LEAVIN IF SO-AND-SO WIN” make me lol, just because no one cares and I doubt anyone will do a damn thing in the end.
I’m not crazy about either candidate, nor am I expecting great things out of either of them. I think things will get worse before they get better, no matter who wins.

  13. Aymie Says:

NK: Have you done any research? While I don’t trust anyone who would claim Obama to be a messiah, he is definitely more promising than the illiterate failure who was elected the last two times, so what are you complaining about?

W had experience as governor of Texas and has arguably done the worst job ever. Why would you require that of the next candidate when it obviously isn’t an automatic sign of their ability to make rational decisions. At least Obama can speak candidly without offending millions or speaking utter gibberish, which is more than I can say for McCain or Bush.

That being said, I think I’m voting for a Triumvirate of the Power Puff Girls! :P

  14. Mr. Gyllenhaal Says:

    He’s not my hero.

McCain all the way baby! Woot!

  15. News: Heather Matarazzo, Gay Principal, Costa Rica, Gym Pill : PinkNews.co.uk Says:

[...] Obama to star in his own comic book. [...]

  16. Bon Says:

Obama a superhero? Oy vey…. Just what has he done that is so heroic in his piddly little three years in the senate?

  17. Chad Says:

Shouldn’t that read “A Real American Hero!!!???”
Lets see: Mcain served in the military.
    Obama is black
McCain volunteered for service while his carrier was in dry dock for repairs resulting in his plane being shot down.
    Obama is black
McCain was a POW for over 5 years
    Obama is black

Wow, no question about it. Obama has totally earned his title as a Real American Hero….WTG!

  18. Beth Says:

What has Obama done to qualify as a “hero”? If a hero is someone who blatantly lies about things he has previously said; someone who refuses to address the US troops with even a hello or a handshake while visiting Iraq recently; someone who wants to raise your taxes and the taxes on small businesses (causing them to fire people because they can’t afford them, therefore increasing the unemployment rate) then yes, Obama qualifies…but that doesn’t sound like a hero in my book.

  19. JM Says:

I think we’re all forgetting the point here. It’s not a matter of who is better, Obama or McCain, it’s that our presidential election has turned into an all out circus!! Whether or not it’s done by Barack or John, I think the fact that we’re making COMIC BOOKS about would-be presidents is rediculous!!
