Christian Bale Busted … For Alleged Assault
This has to be the most shocking, upsetting and unbelievable news ever — news that I pray turns out to be some sort of misunderstanding. It is being reported that charges of assault have been brought against Batman star Christian Bale (yes, the Christian Bale) by his mother and sister. It is being alleged that Bale “assaulted” his mother and sister in a hotel suite in London on Sunday night, that he wasn’t taken into custody yesterday so as not to interfere with the London premiere of The Dark Knight (which took place last night) and that he is undergoing questioning today by Scotland Yard. I first heard about this incident from The Sun late last night but immediately dismissed it as untrue … unfortch, it appears that the reports are true (AP, CNN, BBC). Christian Bale got busted:

Batman star Christian Bale has been arrested by detectives investigating claims he assaulted two family members. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said a 34-year-old man had been arrested in connection with an allegation of assault, and remained in custody. Mr Bale is alleged to have lashed out at his mother and sister in his suite at London’s Dorchester Hotel on Sunday … “A 34-year-old man attended a police station in central London by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault - he currently remains in custody,” a police spokesman said. The Hollywood star attended the European premiere of The Dark Knight last night in London’s Leicester Square. He had been due to meet with radio journalists at the Dorchester Hotel to promote the film on Tuesday afternoon.
I am at a total loss for words. I just hope this whole thing turns out to be some gross misunderstanding but I fear that it won’t. We should be hearing more about this incident today one way or another. I don’t even know what to think … do you?

This is so upsetting…as a huge fan of his, I seriously hope it’s not true. I just saw pictures of him and his beautiful wife and daughter from over the weekend and he couldn’t be any more normal, gentle, and unassuming! Like you said, hopefully it is a huge misunderstanding and/or miscommunication — I believe his mother and sister are former actresses/dancers/arty-types, and while that certainly does not make them crazy, maaaybe they were a little overzealous and dramatic to claim assault against their own brother and son (???). Perhaps they aren’t close anymore and want money/publicity/who knows. For the sake of his wife and daughter (and his career, which comes second), I sincerely hope this doesn’t turn into a huge media shitstorm.

Ehh — the old hags probably deserved it. Leave Batty alone!

Lol…the Sun…I wouldn’t believe them either.. but the BBC? Ehh..
I guess even popular movie stars can be violent people.

Hope it is not true but some parents deserve it…like my father when he was trying to choke me…nutcase!
July 22nd, 2008 at 7:16 am
wow. moms was probably trying to tell him what to wear to the premiere…

By the way, Trent, if you are so upset and refuse to believe this, why did you choose such a…well…suggestive picture of Mr. Bale? I mean, it’s kinda funny…but even if these allegations aren’t true, they definitely have potential to put a big bruise on his career.

I don’t know what to think. But, unless they fared their lives or well being were in emminent danger, what type of mother or sister file charges of assault? Maybe that sounds calous or dismissive of real domestic violence problems, but I do not intend it in that way. I’m just trying to piece together the situation — the charge, so far as we know, is simple assault, not assualt with a deadly weapon, not battery. So no signifiant physical injury is being alleged. There is no charge of false imprisonment — the family was free to leve at any time. He does not live with these people, nor has he for some time. This happened in his hotel suite where he invited his extended family to help him celebrate the launch of his movie.
So, so far, it sounds, worst case scenario: A family fight happened and things got carried away. Christian started shoving his mother and sister, maybe even took a swing or two. The mother and sister fled. Recognize that, so far as any details we know of, this is absolutely the WORST CASE SCENARIO. Ok, this would be absolutely horrible. But EVEN if this is what happened, what sort of mother decides the best way to deal with it is to report it to the police, rather than trying to take care of it in the family… or at least waiting two days for him to go through his premiere? Probably the same sort of mother that could strike the right nerve that would cause a violent outburst.
Again, I have no sympathy for anyone imprisoned for true domestic violence. But the situation surrounding this seems bizarre and the actions of the mother and sister seem vindictive, not defensive.

Oh, I hope this isn’t true! What a horrid thing for his family… Nobody deserves to be treated that way by ANYONE let alone a son or brother!
Let’s cross fingers he’s not that type…

The sad part to me is that fans think because they see pictures of people, interviews of people - that they know what kind of personality a person has. YOU DON’T KNOW who people really are. A few moments in time do not reflect a character or who people really are.
We all have personal demons and this MAN is as capable as doing WRONG as anyone else is. No surprise. I just can’t belive how familarity or being a fan of someone’s work makes people thing they have a clue as to the insight of someone’s true personality.

I really hope this isn’t true. Hopefully it is just a family argument that got a little too out of control. I think we have all been in that situation.

Women need to shut the fuck up when the men are talking!
July 22nd, 2008 at 8:27 am
I’m alarmed by the number of people here who are saying (or implying) that the mum and sister should have kept their mouths shut. That’s CRAZY! Big movie star or not, they have every right to seek the support of all/any State services without our judgement. Sit back, stop judging them, and it’ll all come to light soon enough. I think to succeed in this kind of industry you have to be quite an “A-type” personality and quite controlling and often self-absorbed. I wouldn’t be that surprised if he lashed out under pressure/criticism. Keep in mind if anyone wasn’t going to bow to his demands, it’d be his own family, who knew him before the fame.

Hmmm . . . popular stars who have a problem w anger?? Can anyone say Russell Crowe??? Sean Penn??? Christian Slater??? I’m sorry to hear this about Christain Bale, though. He’s so CUTE!
July 22nd, 2008 at 8:43 am
Wow! That is one freaky pic you found! Seriously! Also, I just think someone wanted some publicity. Its sad that family can’t be supportive and tear people down right when they are in the midst of success.
July 22nd, 2008 at 8:54 am
Shocker! I hope it’s not true. He seems so low key and a regular nice family man. But who really knows what he’s like in private. I’m a bit suspicious of the timing for the allegations. The police seem to have exercised good judgement and restraint in not picking him up before/at the preimere. I hope it’s just a misunderstanding and not true.
July 22nd, 2008 at 9:02 am
I’m not really judging. Even if its true, sometimes you just kind of snap. I know its going to get overplaid cause it was two women but whatever! I still like him.
but as others have said, maybe its a little press because no one is talking about HIS performance. Or it could be that hes pissed about that, and didnt take to the general nagging family can do

i always thought he was creepy…
July 22nd, 2008 at 9:37 am
I love how every article about this makes some pictorial or editorial reference to American Psycho. It makes me chuckle :D :D :D
It all sounds very petty. Bale is a strong man and probably very intimidating. I don’t judge him. Family is best at getting on your last nerve.
July 22nd, 2008 at 9:39 am
Nooooooooooooooooooooo!
July 22nd, 2008 at 9:52 am
Family does have a way of knowing what buttons to push. Also, jet lag and stress causes even good people to do off the wall things in such situations. Hopefully its not a true domestic violence case (I am not sure what DV constitutes in Britain but in the US, yelling can be called DV) but rather a situation that is being blown out of proportion.
July 22nd, 2008 at 10:07 am
The most disturbing part of this story is that he was allowed to go to the premiere so it didn’t interfere with the event. HELLO!!! Any plain old person in the same situation would not have been allowed to attend anything exept a free ride to JAIL.
Heinous. Boo to you, Scotland Yard. You disappoint in the face of celebredom.
July 22nd, 2008 at 10:12 am
he was arrested for verbal assault…so yes yelling. no threatening of physical harm, yelling that causes an alarm. i mean, it’s their right under the law to file the complaint…but don’t all fights w/ yelling come under that??
July 22nd, 2008 at 10:23 am
I hope, hope, hope, hope this was simply blow out of proportion! I think we’re all guilty of having screaming matches with members of our family (at least I hope I’m not the only one!), but surely it couldn’t have caused such alarm that it constituted charges being filed! I just can’t believe it! Say it ain’t so!
July 22nd, 2008 at 10:36 am
Woww…this was one news item that really shocked me. If this is true–and I hope it’s some kind of misunderstanding–then it just proves that the general public really doesn’t know the people who act in their favorite movies. I’ve always thought that the really good actors have to be at least a little “crazy” or however you would put it…maybe that’s why so many good actors get into trouble. But anyway, TRENT, you scared the crap out of me with that picture!
July 22nd, 2008 at 10:58 am
This just seems bizarre. Was he drunk? Did he cause or threaten physical harm? Was it verbal assault? Families fight, I’m sure many of screaming matches. For his mom and sister to report it…something serious must have gone down. I don’t know though. Something about this just seems bizarre.
July 22nd, 2008 at 11:03 am
They probably DID deserve it, probably trying to ride on his coat tails, or his cape, whatever.
Knowing from experience, you can be charged with assault for merely putting your hand on someone, spitting on someone, okay, these are all gross, but still, it doesn’t mean the guy let ‘em have it, full throttle.
I smell a conspiracy to make our man look bad. And I’m not buyin’ it!
July 22nd, 2008 at 11:05 am
yeah is that picture from American Psycho or what?
Made me want to cry….
whaaaaaaaaaaaa!
July 23rd, 2008 at 2:57 am
It’s a bit suss that all these allegations have come out less than a week after The Dark Knight was released…is the timing a coincidence…or maybe his “family” are just trying to make a lawsuit out of this and are hoping for a big payout…
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:24 am
In the UK you can be charged for assault for yelling at someone. So it’s not quite as intense as what we would think here when someone is charged with assault.
