Governor Sarah Palin For Vice President?

The 'New York Times' reports McCain has chosen a female running mate
August 29th, 2008

The New York Times is reporting that Senator John McCain will choose Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate, making her only the second woman to be nominated for Vice President of the United States of America (Democrat Walter Mondale chose Geraldine Ferraro to be his running mate back in 1984, she was the first):

Senator John McCain chose Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate on Friday, shaking up the political world with a surprise pick at a time when his campaign has been trying to attract women, especially disaffected supporters of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. In choosing Ms. Palin — a 44-year-old conservative Christian and self-described “hockey mom” who has been governor for less than two years — the McCain campaign reached far outside the Beltway in an election where the Democratic nominee, Senator Barack Obama, is running on a platform of change. The pick, confirmed by Republicans familiar with the decision, amounted to a roll of the dice, a gamble that an infusion of new leadership — and the novelty of the Republican party’s first female candidate for vice president — would more than compensate for the risk that Ms. Palin could undercut one of the McCain campaign’s central arguments, their claim that Mr. Obama is too inexperienced to be president. But Ms. Palin ran as a change agent when she was elected as governor of Alaska in 2006, and in a move that might have appealed to Mr. McCain, she took political heat from members of her own party for turning the spotlight on the failures of Alaska Republicans, some of whom had been beset by corruption scandals. She opposes abortion rights, which could help pacify social conservatives who were wary as rumors swirled that Mr. McCain might pick a running mate who supports them. But she differs with Mr. McCain on a controversial environment issue that centers on her home state: she supports drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve. Mr. McCain’s opposition to drilling — even after he changed positions and began advocating for off-shore oil drilling — has upset many Republicans. The choice of Ms. Palin was a closely guarded secret, and she flew under the political radar for months as Mr. McCain conducted his search for a running mate. Much of the public discussion in recent days had focused on Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and Mr. McCain’s one-time rival for the Republican nomination; Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota; Tom Ridge, the former Homeland Security secretary, and Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, the Democrat-turned-independent who was Al Gore’s running mate in 2000.

I gotta say, this choice was well-played by McCain. It’s a risky move, especially considering that he and she don’t have much in common. I was sure that McCain was going to pick either the turncoat Joseph Lieberman or the extremely scary Mitt Romney. I guess McCain felt that he needed to choose a running mate with a gimmick to try and bolster support for his campaign — a Pro-Life soccer mom who supports oil drilling in Alaska (one of our nation’s most valued natural resources), who won her governorship (an office she has held for LESS than 2 years) by denouncing her fellow Republicans (who, in her defense, were corrupt), was nicknamed “Sarah Barracuda” in high school and was first runner-up in the Miss Alaska Beauty Pageant back in 1984, when Geraldine Ferraro was the Vice Presidential nominee for the Democratic Party. Yeah, good luck with that :) This race for the White House just got a wee bit more interesting.

  1. Jill Says:

WOW… From someone who wants tolerance and equality, this is an extremely disgusting and bigoted remark about a POWERFUL WOMAN. Why can’t this country accept a powerful woman without having to make offensive comments. Choosing a woman is not a “gimmick” especially when she is in a rightful and deserving spot. NEVER call out a deserving woman as just a gimmick and a tool, as if she does not deserve to be where she is, as the NEXT VICE PRESIDENT.

  2. Jill Says:

PS. I guess the oh-so-tolerant-peaceful Obama supporters are going to crush this woman just as they did with Hilary with their sexist remarks… Can’t wait to see the sexism and the name-calling

  3. FK Says:

Oh, come on Jill!! Please. As a woman and feminist I have no doubt at all that this is a gimmick. After all the Republican attempts to woo Hillary voters, it’s obvious. But it’s not only a gimmick because she’s a woman; she’s also totally unknown, young, and a total surprise. They successfully kept it totally secret until the morning after the convention to try to steal the thunder. You really think that’s not a gimmick? She’s been Governor for 2 years and was the mayor of a small town in Alaska before then. I’m sorry. THAT is really not enough experience to be president in these difficult times.

  4. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

Bigoted remark? Are you serious? You really think that John McCain picked Sarah Palin to be his running mate based on her experience as Governor … she hasn’t even been in office for 2 years. My comments have nothing at all to do with Palin as a woman, it seems extremely gimmicky that he would choose a woman — which seems TO ME — based solely on her gender … esp. when the McCain campaign have made an issue of Obama’s race. Just my $0.02 :)

  5. Tonya Says:

I don’t care if it’s a male or female but ‘conservative christian’ scares me.

  6. monica Says:

I was JUST talking to someone about the fact that he was announcing his running mate today. I thought his only chance in the election was to have a female running mate so I’m not too surprised by this. McCain is so old school (not to mention OLD) that I think under normal circumstances he would’ve picked someone more like himself, whether they be male or female. I guess this just proves it’s all about politics after all.

  7. FK Says:

And to clarify, I said president intentionally because John McCain could croak, to put it crudely, and we need someone we can rely on.

  8. FK Says:

OK. I know I’m commenting too much, but I didn’t even notice the first time that Jill had the — what would you call it? nerve? idiocy? — to say “especially when she is in a rightful and deserving spot.” Again, governor for two years and mayor of small Alaskan town before then makes her deserving of the vice-presidency? Oh! Maybe it’s because her husband works in the oil industry! I forgot. That’s what Republicans think makes a person deserving of the highest levels of office.

  9. Jane Says:

Politicians are all the same. I don’t care which party they’re with, what sex they are, what color they are, what sort of financial status they have, what religion they follow, how old they are. They are ALL the same: doing whatever it takes to get into office. The only decent politician in my time was Jimmy Carter. Now he was REALLY a man of the people! IMO.

  10. Jane Says:

FK ~ Many don’t think Obama has the experience either. While he should be been working for his state in the Senante he was launching his bid for presidency. As for the oil comment - Right On! How true is that?! Ha!

  11. ella Says:

Palin has been in politics since 1992 a good 5 years longer than Obama so don’t go spouting that Obama has more experience. It maybe a gimmick, but her reform-minded nature is probably freaking the Obama campaign out since his whole campaign is based on change. Now he’s not the only one who can bring it.

  12. Politico Says:

A “gimmick” choosing a woman as VP? That is just such an ignorant remark.

I will be the first to tell you- I was a proud Democrat and seriousely considering being an Obama supporter- Until he chose Joe Bidden as his running mate. I contributed vastly to Hillary Clinton’s campaign. And for what? After the Obama campaign played the race card against Bill and Hillary and because he is phony tiger who is trying to change his stripes to get elected, and because he did not put Hillary on the ticket or, worse, even seriously consider her, I will be voting republican for the first time in my life. At least I can trust McCain to do the things that we do agree with him on. The things we don’t agree on will just have to be casualties of the Obama celebrity express.

Obama should be retiring Hillary’s campaign debt. She should have made him do that before she spoke for him the other night.

    Just my $0.02…

  13. Seriously? Says:

I can’t believe you had the gall to call Lieberman a turncoat. Why? Because he doesn’t make decisions based on political party but thinks for himself?

  14. FK Says:

Should I shut up now? Jane your one-two puch the left and right has calmed me down. ;) Just to say it, though, (I’m sorry! I swear I will stop soon!) I looked it up ella, and yes, Palin did join the city council of her 8000 person town in 1992, 5 years before Obama joined the Illinois State Senate, but he was organizing and working with people on the South Side of Chicago at that time. I just think that experience has more relevance to our country than joining the city council for a town of 8,000 in Alaska.

  15. Sarah DAY Says:

Wow I didn’t know John McCain was friends with Tina Fey lol

  16. Casey Says:

I was truly hoping for Condi Rice. Now THAT’s a candidate no one could call a gimmick. In fact, I hope she runs for President in 4 years - that would be amazing!

And Biden? Seriously? Obama sealed his coffin with that choice. He would have won with Hillary, but let his personal issues with her get in the way. What a waste.

So, as usual, the Dems have peaked too soon. From here on out, McCain will gain steam and win the election. And, once again, we’ll have a vocal minority screaming about fixed elections or unfair balloting practices.

  17. Panti Christ Says:

I think Ms. Palin was in a Miss Alaska pageant?

  18. Bobby Ewing Says:

You have to admit that Sarah Palin is pretty hot (remember she was in the Ms. Alaska Pageant) and MUCH BETTER on the eyes than Joe Biden

  19. kendell Says:

amen ella! and enough with the republican bashing. lets not bash anyone! its an effing blog and calm the freak down! he chose a running mate… good for him. the running mate ANY canidate chooses (repub. or dem.) is one that has to be made with thought… the goal is WINNING the election. of COURSE he chose a person he thought would help him.. its POLITICS… obama did the same exact thing… they bash osama for being inexperienced… he gets someone with tons of it to fill in the void he has… mccain got someone who he thought would help him out… good for him. seriously you guys… do you not even think? and ENOUGH with the bashing. i could go on and on and on about how horrible a certain politician is… but we have the left side and the right side to keep us balanced… its called checks and ballances? duh! jeez people.. seriously.

  20. Love it Says:

I think this is a smart choice for his campaign. We need oil independance. She is a big advocate to drill in ANWR. She will appeal to women b/c she is a mother of 5, one who has down’s that she knew would be conflicted with this and she decided not to abort. She is the only one now on a ticket that has executive experience. Regardless of two years experience. Obama has never even had his name associated with any legislature. Plus, if you’ve ever seen her speak. She is no shrinking violet. BTW- politicians play games and this was John McCains check mate. I fully support this and I am finally excited about the election.

  21. Panti Christ Says:

    Kendell - it’s spelled O-b-a-m-a.

  22. kendell Says:

osama/obama same thing. tee hee.. seriously accidental typo. lol.

  23. Kendra Says:

As far as experience goes, Governor trumps Senator..Especially a much supported Governor..And she didn’t renounce her fellow Republicans..She looked into shady dealings of a Republican chairman which put her at odds with her party..I think that takes guts and shows she won’t be intimidated..I think it’s a smart move on McCain’s part and will help woo quite a few undecided voters..Will he win? Who knows..But it makes for a very exciting election!

P.S. Even though we may differ on political views, I love you Trent! You are my favorite blogger out there!

  24. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

I <3 you, too Kendra. I agree … differing political views shouldn’t mean we can’t all be friends. We all want what’s best for our country.

  25. Eve Says:

Trent, sometimes you are unreal. And this is a good example why. You don’t have the right to play the experience card. Obama barely has 1 full term as US Senator, and TWO of those years he was campaigning for President. He doesn’t have ANY executive experience. Sarah Palin was a member of the Wasilla City Council from 1992-1996. 1996 She ran for MAYOR and WON. in 2005 she challenged an incumbent Governor and she WON. She challenged her fellow Republicans for lack of ethics. She brought ethic reform to Alaska. She has more leadership (REAL leadership Trent) She has executive experience. And for you to call Palin choice as a “gimmick” is ridiculous. You would have to say Geraldine Ferraro was a “gimmick” pick in 1984. Stick to celeb gossip Trent and leave the politics to the experts because you clearly know NOTHING.

You liberals are terrified of Palin. She is a STRONG, Independent woman who has raised FIVE kids, one being a down-syndrome baby. Her eldest son being active duty in the military. This woman is gold.

    McCain/Palin ‘08!

  26. Marge Says:

I am assuming that most of you are Obama supporters who are all about his message for “change.” What kind of change and moving away from Washington politics (his supposed primary reason for running) is selecting a 35 year Senate veteran. Also, what has Obama ever accomplished? I worked in the US Senate for one year and never once saw him offer any legislation or for that matter even speak on the Senate floor. Quit bashing on the new girl. She has helped deter corruption in the state of Alaska while still raising her 5 children. Who is to say that she can’t help deter corruption in Washington?

  27. Jane Says:

The only thing I don’t like about her is she’s into hunting. I’m so against that!

  28. Politico Says:

    Eve you said it all.

  29. LizzyB Says:

Come on Hillary folks! Stand with her as she has asked us to do. Do you honestly think having Republicans in the White House four more years is a good thing? Remember the McCain voting with Bush 90 PERCENT of the time!!! I am a mom like Palin, too, and because of that, I gotta go with the Democrats.

  30. las Says:

Wow nothing gets people going like a little political banter. Trent, it’s your blog and you, in my humble opinion, can talk about whoever you want and support whoever you want. Some of the rest of you - geez relax already. Post your opinions but for crying out loud - lay off Trent - it’s HIS BLOG! I, for one, have never even heard of this woman.

  31. Elisa Says:

Dems are going to pull out all the stops to bash this woman when in reality we know they’re upset because mccain just stole obama’s limelight after his academy award style convention speech. Why is it ok for Obama run after a few years as a senator but its not for a republican governor? Just a thought….

  32. Kris Says:

What a great discussion!! I’m a conservative/christian/republican! Proud of it too. I personally would have loved to see Condi Rice as the VP candidate. This election is going to be so fun to watch…..love the diversity!!

  33. FK Says:

OK. I’m watching Sarah Palin’s speech, and it really looks like McCain keeps staring at her ass. It’s hilarious. I know that’s a terrible thing to say, but it’s, like, impossible to ignore! And I agree with las and Kendra. We can disagree, but lay off Trent! And now I’m going to bite my tongue (even though I want to respond to some of the other political statements, oooo)!

  34. FK Says:

High five Kris. You’re totally right. Whatever the case, how great that the politically smart thing to do is to bring more diversity to the ticket.

  35. Kris Says:

High Five back FK!! Not sure if it was the energy drink that I just had or the upcoming election that has me so jacked but I can’t wait!!! This is going to be awesome!! What a monumental year!! :)

  36. Jenn Says:

Quite honestly, this is a gimmick. The fact that there are democrats deciding to not vote at all since Hillary was not nominated may go for McCain because of this. People will vote just because she’s a woman. Same with people that will or will not vote for Obama because he’s black. McCain did the smartest thing he could do that could possibly bring him back on par with Obama, and that’s get the Hillary vote.

The problem is that she has no real experience outside of Alaska. Yes, she has the National Guard, but nothing substantial that would qualify her to be VP of the entire country.

By nominated a woman, it is indeed a gimmick to get more votes. It’s a strategy. Just because it’s a woman doesn’t make it sexist.

  37. Jenn Says:

Jill - So, by how you seem to understand sexism, anything negative said about her will automatically be considered sexist? Saying negative things about a woman does not define as sexism. If they say negative things about her based on the fact that she’s a woman, then it is sexism.

If someone comes up to me and says “God, you’re so freaking stupid”. That is not sexism, even though I’m a woman.

  38. Jenn Says:

I see way too many people saying they’ll now vote for Mccain/Palin just because Hillary didn’t get nominated.

If you’re just going to vote because of gender and not because of policies or how well they would do in office, then I would rather you didn’t vote at all.

  39. Me Says:

I love that everyone (not just here, but in general) is saying this is a suprise. My friends and I had her in the running for VP 4 weeks ago…it’s a great strategy and just made this election that much more interesting!!!!

  40. Paulette Says:

I am so psyched. This really changes the dynamic of the presidential race. Palin has MORE EXPERIENCE than Obama. I was a Hilary supporter because she was/is someone who can get the job done. We need people of action to take office at this critical juncture.

Obama picking Biden was a huge disappointment for me. McCain picking Palin could make a real difference for voters.

  41. Heather Says:

This is absolutely ridiculous! For one, I am republican and in full support of McCain’s choice. I see Sarah Palin as a strong choice, NOT a gimmick, and honestly, even Joe Biden himself said Obama doesn’t have enough experience. And I’d rather have a relatively less-experienced VP with platforms I agree on than a relatively less-experienced president!

That being said, lay off Trent! He is completely entitled to his opinions, that’s what this country is about! (Everyone remember free speech?) His blog=his right to say whatever he wants! Everyone needs to just chill, you don’t have to agree with someone, just take your opinions to the polls in November!

  42. JHop Says:

There was a woman on the local PBS station here in Chicago that summed up my feelings about this whole election pretty soundly. She was talking about reconciling one’s feminist beliefs with one’s disagreement with Hillary.
She said “Just because you want to vote for a woman, doesn’t mean you have to vote for the first one that comes along.” I’d hoped that all of the PUMA (not the shoes, folks) reps and other feminists would agree with that, but I’m honestly afraid that the die-hard Hillary supporters will vote for McCain because of this move.
I’m sure Palin is a delightful woman and “her kids’ mom”, but I just don’t think she’s got what it takes to be president. I don’t mean experience, either. I mean a strong grasp of the issues and policies necessary to make the decisions that she would be called upon to make if she and McCain were elected.
I am by no means a self-loathing woman, I can just see the forest for the trees.

  43. bianca Says:

I appreciate your analysis of her record, but don’t diss soccer moms. I am not one myself, but the phrase itself should not be used as a way to show Palin’s dubious credentials. You should know better than to be so misogynistic, esp regarding a certain demographic of women who support your site. Aren’t you a godparent yourself? Did you never need driving to soccer as a kid? I mean, gimme a break. You listed “soccer mom” with Prolife life oil driller.

  44. wendell Says:

She is against marriage equality, rights for domestic partners, etc. She is a conservative republican, woman or not. this doesn’t make me like McCain anymore than I did before.

  45. FK Says:

To Jenn, don’t worry! I haven’t seen any Hillary supporters saying they’re now going to vote for McCain/Palin. I really don’t see that happening! Trent was a Hillary supporter, and all of my friends who were Hillsters are more disgusted that anyone would think that it’s only about gender than impressed that McCain chose a woman. OK, Paulette … Palin has more experience than Obama? DIFFERENT experience for sure. As I wrote before, city council of an Alaskan town of 8,000 is not the same as organizing on the South Side of Chicago for social and economic justice and re-engagement. You might think city council is better because it is officially “government.” I think working in the trenches on real issues is better. Difference of opinion. But growing up in a small-town in Alaska and traveling as far away as Idaho to earn her Bachelor’s degree in journalism/communications and then going back to the small town in Alaska where she grew up to join city council just doesn’t seem like adequate preparation to me.

  46. Matt Says:

Well I benefit whoever wins. If Obama/Biden win, my rights might improve. If McCain/Palin win, my wallet will stay thick. Either way I win. Go whoever wins!!!

  47. Emily Says:

Gender and experience aside, I don’t like what I am hearing about this woman. It seems that she got her former brother-in-law, a state trooper, FIRED in the middle of a custody dispute between him and her sister. Somehow I do not think that THIS is what Obama meant when he said “i am my sister’s keeper”. Putting this little tidbit in perspective is then the fact that she has only been governber for a bit less than two years. So in that small amount of time, she has ALREADY abandoned the morals she campaigned on and become corrupt herself!

I personally feel that she was a poor choice for McCain in a desperate attempt to move himself away from the “old white man” stigma that follows him. Well, now he’s an “old white man” who’s trying to make himself appear to be an accepting, foreward thinking individual.

And, of course, on a completely different note, I’ve sort of lost my respect for the Miss America Organization as well- Seriously?! Haha again, thats just my first amendment free speech very own personal opinion!

  48. courtney Says:

gotta say, i’m pretty disappointed in this post…i’ve come to appreciate the open-mindedness of this blog…but i guess that only applies when it’s something you believe in.
    it’s a shame.

  49. Dawn Says:

As a woman I’m offended — but not by anything Trent said. I agree with him! I’m offended that McCain didn’t pick a more formidable woman for such an important office. She is so inexperienced and doesn’t bring much to the table. I’m not an idiot — McCain’s feeble attempt to woo women away from the Democrats won’t work with me. I would rather vote for a ticket with two men who will uphold a woman’s right to choose than for a ticket with a woman who will work to overturn it. I fear for the future of women’s issues if John McCain is elected and a conservative female VP does nothing to alleviate those fears.

  50. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

Dawn hits it right on the head, I think. If you really support women’s issues then you can’t support Palin’s political stance which seeks to curtail a woman’s right to choose. I don’t think it’s close-minded to disagree and vehemently oppose someone whose political position is to curtail women’s rights … not to mention the rights for all citizens of the US to marry.

  51. Kim Says:

So many ways I could respond to the comments here, but I think I’ll just go with this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pak-rH0dCeA&eurl=http://www.raisingkaine.com/

She doesn’t know what the VP does. But, sure, she’s qualified.

  52. Jane Says:

I’m telling y’all these politicians are all the same. Dig deep enough into anyone’s background and you’ll find what some ppl would call corruption, favoritism, neopitism, prejudice in one form or another against one group or another, lies, scandals, bravado and weakness. They all have their good points and they all have their bad points. Everyone’s just going to have to look really closely at the candidates and find which one works best for them. I can find reasons to vote for each one and reasons not to vote. The hard part is weighing things out.

  53. Brandi Says:

The only positive I can see (admittedly without a whole lot of research at this point) is that it’s a woman which gives him an appearance of more diversity. How is it that they give Obama so much grief for not having a lot of experience and then pick a woman who went form nothing, to mayor - straight to governor in no time flat. Now’s she’s got a very good chance of being president? It’s a little scary to me to think that the Presidential candidates go through such a microscope but the VP candidates come from nowhere at times. If she was running on her own…would she even get close? That worries me because McCain is not a young bird and if anything were to happen to him, she’d be running the country.

  54. REALLY WORRIED Says:

IF she would never even get a chance of being a candidate on her own, I don’t think she’s makes for a very strong running mate. It appearts as if he’s trying to get the woman vote by adding a woman.

  55. FK Says:

Checked out the link, Kim. Whoa.

  56. Kris Says:

Just watched the youtube video….is there a reason why she can’t find out *exactly* what the VP does?? Wow, lets work on making mountains out or molehills!! That’s politics tho….I’m thrilled there is someone in there from a truly “rural” state…being a Montanan myself, it’s cool!! I’m excited to see how it’s all going to play out.

  57. Jen Says:

Of course Palin was selected because she’s a woman! And I don’t think it’s sexist to say this at all. McCain’s been getting dinged for being too old and not having a lot of diversity in his campaign. Palin brings both youth and diversity with her. If McCain hadn’t picked this gal, he would have likely gone for someone from a different ethnic background. The fact is, Obama’s campaign is all about change and it’s hard for McCain to top that when he clearly represents the more traditional “old white male” politician. He needed to find someone he could use to compete against Obama’s multi-ethnic background and youth. And looks like he may have done so.

That said, as a former Hillary supporter (and now firmly behind the Obama campaign)…I find it a bit insulting that the McCain folks think they can stick an unknown gal on the ticket and somehow woo me away. Yes, Hillary appealed to me because she’s a woman but also because I felt she had the experience to be in office and her politics and beliefs spoke to me. I’m a democrat, first and foremost, and I’m certainly not going to jump over to the other side just because they’ve got a woman on the ticket. This isn’t American Idol people…and I am not going to get duped into another eight years of hell simply because the extremely conservative VP nominee happens to have boobs. Ugh.

  58. REALLY WORRIED Says:

See - that’s the problem - when you start picking people just to win the election -is she qualified to be the Present because that is a very real possibility.

  59. Jen Says:

To be completely fair…I believe both sides have been playing this game. Obama has been getting dinged for his youth/lack of experience so he selected someone who can counterbalance that and bring a few missing elements to the table. So certainly Obama selected Biden to help push him over the finish line.

Having said that…I still feel Biden was chose for his experience and expertise whereas until proven otherwise, I suspect Palin was selected more for what she represents (a young, female, mom) and less for her actual qualifications. Not to say she’s a moron or doesn’t have any business being selected…but my guess is McCain would have gone for a more traditional VP candidate had his opponent been a more traditional presidential candidate.

  60. REALLY WORRIED Says:

I agree with where are going with your post. I also agre with Trent though. Just doesn’t seem like there is much experience from Palin. Is everyone counting on the fact that she’ll never have to be president…b/c it just makes me nervous.

  61. Jen Says:

amen to that. If McCain is elected in November…I fervently hope he’s got a strong ticker and isn’t at risk for alzheimer’s or some other debilitating disease. I don’t give a rat’s rear how great a governor, wife, mom Palin is…I don’t agree with her politics and she just doesn’t have enough experience to be the head of our nation.

  62. shannon Says:

This is all pandering to the feminist vote and the disenfranchised Clinton supporters. Just because a candidate has a vagina doesn’t mean that the feminists will vote for her. She opposes same-sex rights and is opposed to abortion in all forms, EVEN IN CASES OF RAPE/INCEST AND WHEN THE MOTHER’S HEALTH IS IN DANGER. Does this sound like someone feminists voters should support?

I vote based on a candidate’s position on the issues, not on their race/gender/sexual orientation/etc. And McCain still isn’t getting my vote!

  63. Brooke Says:

I must first point out that this is TRENT’s blog and as the author, he can express his opinion how he chooses. That is the beauty of free speech. We, as his faithful readers, also have the choice to agree or disagree with him. We also have the freedom to post whatever replies we want. But, let’s keep all the left and right bashing to a minimum. Ultimately, we all want what is best for the country. We should all put our money where our mouth is and go out there and hit the streets in support of the canditate of our choosing. Now, let’s get on with the celeb gossip. Is Jessica Biel pregnant or not??

  64. Cinnamon Says:

No gimmick but a very carefully crafted response to all that McCain is not for conservatives…she is the real deal conservative Christian: still married to her highschool sweetheart, hunter, lifetime NRA member, successful small business owner, anti-abortion to the point of giving birth to a child she knew would have Downs Syndrome, killed pork-barrel projects and saved the state money, against gay marriage. She’s more the real deal than Ronald Reagan ever was — the chica walks her talk in ways that are not easy. She scares me too, but because she’s given the McCain cause a real shot in the arm. Check her Wikipedia entry folks.

  65. Missy Says:

I feel insulted that he thinks the only way he can win is by picking a woman. Too add insult to injury he had to pick a woman beneath him — couldn’t he have picked a congress woman.

I think he crapped his pants when he heard Obama’s speech and acted out of desperation.

    Just my 2 cents.

  66. ain't buyin' it Says:

“conservative Christian, hunter, lifetime NRA member, anti-abortion, against gay marriage”

all reasons why the Republicans cannot be allowed to govern our nation. palin is proof positive of everything that is wrong with the Republican party

  67. just me Says:

Obama has little experience running his household let alone a country yet you fools are going to vote for him. He had to pick a vp with some knowledge so he can have someone make decisions for him. McCain however chooses a woman and here come the insults of not enough experience, blah blah blah the same thing that is true about Obama but you people have your blinders on and refuse to see past them. How about we all agree to disagree and vote come november for the best candidate to lead the country. I am deffo not voting for obama, I want a woman who sees things the way I do to be the vp.I don’t want this “change” Obama is selling, he can keep it.

  68. steve landis Says:

finally someone who walks the walk.

pro life… bring a down syndrome child to term
pro war… send your own son
problems with corruption.. buck your own party

    brilliant choice

  69. nope Says:

    yikes!

  70. steve landis Says:

    brilliant response

  71. Chris Says:

Abandoning a 5 month old with Down’s syndrome to run for VP? Reminds me of Edwards with his dying wife, but at least she was complicit. DOESN”T YOUR FAMILY NEED YOU RIGHT NOW? This degree of selfishness is extremely repulsive to me, and I’m the kind of “soccer mom” McCain is trying to attract. I think she was a horrible pick, and can’t be a decent human being based on her “parenting”.

  72. steve landis Says:

abandon??? how many others would have aborted it..
including I’m ashamed to say, myself

  73. Chris Says:

She’s a very conservative, pro-life politician. Did she really have the option of abortion? She went back to work 3 days after delivery. So, yes, abandoned, though the argument could be made that she already has.

  74. steve landis Says:

i see… quitting a public service position and abandon
the electorate is the moral thing to do.. i guess she should
also give up her paycheck and allow you and me, the
taxpayer, to pay what will ultimately be a huge financial cost

  75. Verodemort Says:

I always wonder why people are so concerned about black, white, brown, yellow, male, or female. Seriously, why does that matter at all? I look at their views, the substance of the person, not their hair color, or their skin color, and certainly not what hangs out between their legs. And anti-gay, anti-choice, pro-war, pro-ANWR oil, pro-guns, BRAND FREAKIN NEW governor is NOT for me. She has even less experience then Obama, and with McCain being soooooo old, having had cancer FOUR TIMES, I’m just not persueded that this woman can lead America in the case of McCain kicking the bucket prematurely. Not to mention she’s being investigated AS WE SPEAK of abusing her power in Alaska. Yes, she seems like SUCH A GREAT CHOICE!! Give me an effin’ break. In the event that Obama dies, I have perfect faith that Joe Biden will do a great job, no question about that. Do your research!! Register to vote! and Vote Wisely!!

  76. jurassic Says:

typical liberal attitude convict before the evidence is in

and joe biden.. do my research.. if only he did his own he would not now stand exposed as a serial plagiarist.

  77. Kait36 Says:

I think it is an interesting pick. It is odd…especially since the McCain camp has been saying Obama isn’t not experienced enough…yet Palin has only been governor for 2 years. So, I’m not sure. Many seem to think this is McCain’s way of grabbing former Hillary supporters. Some think this is a brilliant choice. Many think it is a gamble and aren’t sure how it’s gonna turn out. I for one am not sure if this was a good pick for McCain…but I don’t know much about her yet. So I need to do some research and I want to hear her speak more before I form an opinion. Although, I already have my mind made up on who I am voting for, and that is Barack Obama. I don’t get why people make such a big deal over race and gender in this election…but apparently it seems like it is playing a big role. I don’t care who you support, I just think you should do some research before you make a decision and get out there and VOTE!!

  78. Jen Says:

    Well said.

  79. ella Says:

She may not have tons of experience, but neither does Obama. People are all for Obama even with little experience, but attack Palin because she doesn’t have it either? Hurray for hypocrisy.

  80. Tony Says:

Please vote Obama. Seriously - this 44 year old with zero experience is one breath away from the presidency if McCain dies off….which is possible. This woman is a gun toting, pro-life, no experienced novice. Think about it. We do not need an old geezer and a nobody in office spewing off 4 more years of crap. Make a difference for you, your loved ones and the world. Vote Obama. Vote for change.

  81. Tony Says:

And anti-gay, anti-choice, pro-war, pro-ANWR oil, pro-guns, BRAND FREAKIN NEW governor is NOT for me.

  82. jonesy Says:

hey tony.. 72 is not an old geezer runts like yourself
have not respect for wisdom only acquired by life experience.

change for change sake is about the most naive, juvenile
sentiment there is. grow up wise up

  83. Tony Says:

That dumb bitch doesnt even know what the VP does….

  84. jonesy Says:

i’m sure you, in all your infinite wisdom, can teach her a
    thing or two. schmuck

  85. Tony Says:

I am grown up…and 72 is fucking OLD. Especially when you have health problems. Don’t be an idiot!

  86. Tony Says:

I am not the one running for office. I am an american who has a voice, rights, and a vote. I will speak my mind and say as I please. The republicans haven’t taken that right away …. yet. Obama/Biden 08.

  87. jonesy Says:

your comments speak for themselves pity

  88. Jenn Says:

Sorry Jonesy but 72 is old. If not, then what do you define as old? The average life expectancy in the United States is 77.5-80 years old. Considering McCain’s poor health, it’s not a stretch to assume he may not make it to that age.

A 72 year old may have *cough* “wisdom”, but they also tend to be out of touch with what we need NOW. They’re from a different age. I, personally, believe that leader of the country should be someone from the age they’re hoping to lead in.

  89. JD Says:

Ok… I have to comment on the no experience comment. She may have only been Gov for less than 2 years, but she is running and ENTIRE STATE people! I love how everyone looks over the fact that Obama has only been a 2 term Senator. HE DOES NOT HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE and he does not explain anything that he plans on doing. “I’m going to spend 150 billion on ensuring we end our dependency on oil” Exactly what are you going to do? He is all show and no substance, but that just goes to show you how niave people are.

  90. Paz Says:

I would just like to share this tidbit since everything I wanted to say and everything I disagree with have been said:

Apparently someone from Fox News responded to Palin’s lack of foreign experience by saying that being leader of Alaska, which is near Russia,. is close to having foreign experience.

    The brilliance of Fox News.

  91. Tony Says:

She is running the state with the population of Austin, Texas. Woohoo. Thats experience we can trust. NOT. Choosing her as a running mate is irresponsible, considering his age. Would you trust someone with your family, your children with someone you met ONCE? He has entrusted her with 300 million american lives if he doesn’t make his term (quite possible at his age). Irresponsible and stupid. Clearly desperation for votes.

    Vote Obama.

  92. super_deb Says:

It doesn’t matter who McCain would have picked, this conversation would be exactly the same, but with different points of contention. Duh. I am so bothered that so many people only take the time to attack what they don’t like as opposed to pointing out what makes their choice so exceptional. And that goes both ways. I have no idea who I will vote for, but I can say that all this negativity wears me the eff out. Isn’t Nader running again? ha.

  93. jonesy Says:

    hey jenn
70 is considered “young elderly” these days

many great world leaders are far older

what exactly are the needs of the majority?? more handouts
and government pampering.?? Take matters into your own
    hands and stop whining.

  94. Rosie Says:

Great Choice! I’m invigorated by his choice! I would like to ask how anyone thinks Obama has more experience when he has been in the Senate for less than 2 years. Hmmmm. I actually like that she hasn’t been a career politician
