‘Lights In The Sky’ Over Toledo, OH

The TV Guide
August 26th, 2008

Last night Sarah and I hightailed it down South to drive into Ohio to see Nine Inch Nails play the SeaGate Convention Center. Now, I new beforehand that the venue would be a small one but it was really pretty effing small. It wasn’t until Trent Reznor announced from the stage that the venue was too small to accommodate all of the stage equipment that I even knew we weren’t getting the “full show” (reading a few reviews on Echoing the Sound further alerted me to the fact that the Toledo show was “amended” a bit to accommodate the smaller venue) … to be honest, I thought the show was amazing so I didn’t miss a thing. That said, I’m very glad that I’m going to the Inglewood, CA show (the last of the US tour) next week cuz now I want to know what I missed last night.

Again, the show was pretty stunning nonetheless … here are a few of the pics that I snapped last night:

After about the 3rd song or so, Trent announced from the stage, “We’re happy to be playing the homecoming dance” referring to the tiny size of the venue. Man, it was just really great being able to see NIN in such an intimate space. After the jump, see the full show setlist, check out a short video that I shot of Trent Reznor talking to the crowd and a funny-ass video that I stumbled upon this morning that features Trent Reznor, has nothing at all to do with last night’s show but is simply NOT TO BE MISSED …

Here is the setlist from last night’s show:

999,999
1,000,000
Letting You
Discipline
March of the Pigs
Head Down
The Frail
Closer
Gave Up
Corona Radiata

Me I’m Not
The Great Destroyer

Pinion
Wish
Terrible Lie
Survivalism
Ghosts 8
Only
The Hand That Feeds
Head Like a Hole

Echoplex
Meet Your Master
God Given
Hurt

I understand that this setlist was much shorter than previous shows, prolly because key equipment was missing for those portions of the show. Also, Trent explained that he was pissy that he couldn’t get all of his equipment in the venue, that his voice is getting wrecked and he was getting tired as the US tour nears its end … oh, why don’t you just hear the man speak for himself:

It’s a little difficult to hear him clearly (the crowd was very raucous) but he did give a pretty cool little speech, which was a nice surprise since he doesn’t usually do a lot of talking on stage. He also asked how many folks in the crowd have listened to the last “proper” NIN album Year Zero, saying: “Listen to that fucking thing. It’s good.” Hahahaha!

The show was pretty damn amazing, I’ve been to quite a few NIN shows over the years and this one ranks up there with the best of them. Mebbe it was the intimacy, mebbe it was the tight sound of the band but Sarah and I had an absolute blast. I learned last night, after I got home, that NIN have been playing a little game at their recent shows … an envelope is hidden somewhere in the venue and the lucky finder gets an autograph and the promise of a “surprise” from the band after the tour finishes. This is very much like the USB sticks that were hidden in venues around Europe last year when the band was touring ahead of the release of Year Zero (new songs were found on those USB sticks). I have to state, for the record, that Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor are the effing coolest guys around. They are clearly having fun with their tour, they really appreciate their fans and they work really hard to give the best show they can give. It’s no wonder that I love them so entirely.

I can’t wait to see them again back home in SoCal.

OH … and check out this amazing video of Trent Reznor from his days before he created Nine Inch Nails:

They played Corona Radiata? That’s pretty cool given how long it is. Ahhhh, the 80s hair, it reminds of a boy.

If you think that 1986 interview is embarrassing, do a YouTube search for “Option 30″ or “Slam Bamboo.”

Glad to know you had a good time, and now November 25 can’t get here fast enough.

Saw them in STL last week, it was amazing, as always!
I’m jealous of the chit chat and the small venue!!

Wow, seems like you’ve gotten WAY too big for yourself Trent. There’s nothing wrong with the Seagate, it’s not that “effing small.” I was born and raised in Toledo, and like you moved to SoCal, but NEVER would I go to another town and start publicly dissing their venues. Maybe you should do your homework next time you want to go see a show so you don’t have to sit in such a little place to hear your precious band play and also degrade an AMAZING town!!!!!

that’s awesome! i’m so glad you went to the prom show! lucky!

T-Town Girl, did you not notice that Trent said “…it was just really great being able to see NIN in such an intimate space,” and “I’ve been to quite a few NIN shows over the years and this one ranks up there with the best of them. Mebbe it was the intimacy…” Please get the whole story before flying off the handle.

I saw NIN in Ga earlier this month - it was the single best concert I have ever witnessed. The crowd knew ever word to every song. It was a spectacular show of sound, visual imagery, and the vibrations from the speakers were strong enough to shake my hair! I freaking loved it to pieces!

  13. Kelly Says:

I love his signature singing pose. With both hands on the mike and kind of leaning into it while singing. Some super sexy arms going on there. I saw NIN in Indy years ago and they were great.

  14. Maureen Says:

I really wanted to go to the toledo show, but couldn’t make it (having to really work sucks!). I did make it to the CT show and am going to nj tonight and philly friday…you are in for a great show in inglewood!! The ghosts portions and in this twilight (the parts that were left out in toledo) are simply amazing. Thank god for youtube… TRs onstage banter at this show was great! Have fun at the next show.

Am I the only one that can’t help but think of Snape from Harry Potter when I see Trent Reznor!! I love him though, he is well spoken and a musical genious. Absolutely an asset to our musical world!!
