The ‘Pregnant Man’ Is Having Another Baby

If at first you succeed ...
Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Four months ago Thomas Beatie, the transgendered person more famously known as the “Pregnant Man”, gave birth to his first child with his wife Nancy Beatie. Susan Juliette was born on July 3 to much fanfare and was introduced to the world about 3 weeks later. This week, the Beaties show off little Susan Juliette to Barbara Walters on ABC’s 20/20 and share a bit of exciting news — the “Pregnant Man” is pregnant again:

Thomas Beatie, the controversial “pregnant man” who gave birth to a daughter earlier this year, reveals to Barbara Walters in an exclusive interview that he is pregnant again with his second child. Thomas Beatie, a transgender, welcomed a baby girl, Susan, June 29. Since sharing the story of Susan’s birth with ABC News, he and his wife, Nancy Beatie, hadn’t spoken to the media until they sat down last month with Walters. Thomas Beatie, who is in his first trimester, tells Walters he did not go back on the male hormone testosterone after Susan’s birth so he could have another baby. “I feel good,” he said. “I had my checkups with my hormone level, as far as the HCG. And everything is right on track.” He says the baby is due June 12. Thomas Beatie also spoke to Walters about Susan’s birth, which was not via Caesarean section. He was in labor for 40 hours; Nancy Beatie cut the umbilical cord.

I mean … why not, right? It sounds like the Beaties are very interested in having as normal a family life as they can (with the 2 1/2 children and all) considering the man in the relationship is the one having the kids. They look really happy and it goes to show that the power of love knows no bounds. I gotta say that I think the fam should be commended for keeping out of the public spotlight for as much as they have. Except for the handful of interviews they’ve done with ABC, People magazine, etc. they’ve really stayed out of the limelight (this is the first we’ve heard from the family since the baby’s birth in July). It gives me great pleasure to be among the first folks to congratulate them on the impending arrival of their second child and wish them all the happiness in the world!!

Meet Susan Juliette Beatie

Daughter of the "pregnant man" makes her debut
Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Thomas Beatie, known the world over as the formerly “pregnant man”, and his wife Nancy show off the first pics of their newborn baby girl Susan Juliette in this week’s issue of People magazine. Good Morning America ran a short piece on the photos this morning detailing portions of the baby’s birth and providing deets on the home life of the new family:

It’s been three weeks since his blue-eyed baby debuted in this world, but Thomas Beatie – better known around the world as the Pregnant Man – can already say this about his daughter’s personality: “She’s easygoing and mellow and intelligent.” On June 29 at 8:55 p.m., Beatie, 34, a former female beauty pageant contestant, made cultural history as perhaps the first legally transgender male to give birth, bringing into the world a 9 lbs., 5 oz. baby girl named Susan Juliette. “She’s so precious, I just can’t stop staring at her,” Thomas tells PEOPLE in his first interview since he and wife Nancy returned with their bundle from Bend, Oregon’s St. Charles Medical Center. “Just holding her is the best feeling in the world.” Susan – named after Thomas’s mother and conceived through artificial insemination with donor sperm – arrived after 40 hours of labor, with Nancy at Thomas’s side acting as his coach. “When Susan finally came out, it was like in slow motion,” says Thomas. “I was full of wonder.” Echoes Nancy: “There were tears of joy.” Both father and daughter came through the birth in perfect health. “I weigh two pounds less than I did before I got pregnant,” adds Thomas. “And I don’t have a single stretch mark!” At home, the couple is adjusting to their new nightly schedule: Nancy breastfeeding (by induced lactation, a process using hormones and physical stimulation with a breast pump) and Thomas keeping company while watching TV. Crows Thomas, “Susan is a miracle! And we’re finally the family we’ve been dreaming of.”

Here is video of GMA showing off the People magazine photos on the air earlier this morning:

Already the family is referring to baby Susan as “Daddy’s Little Princess” (for obvs reasons). While Susan was named after Thomas’s mother, her middle name Juliette was given after her mother Nancy’s middle name. Susan was born via natural vaginal childbirth and father and daughter were able to leave the hospital 4 days after the baby was born. By all accounts, everyone is happy and healthy and I couldn’t wish more for the family. It is my sincere hope that the family is able to live out their lives in peace and quiet. I’m pretty astounded by the uproar that the Beaties have generated because of all of this. Thomas Beatie told Oprah Winfrey that it isn’t a woman or man’s desire to have children, it’s a human desire … and I couldn’t agree more. Best of luck and much happiness Beaties! Congrats on your beautiful baby girl.

The ‘Pregnant Man’ Gives Birth

'Man' gives birth to Girl
Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Thomas Beatie, better known to the world as the “Pregnant Man”, has just given birth to a baby girl — according to ABC News (THOMAS BEATIE, ALSO KNOWN AS THE ‘PREGNANT MAN,’ GIVES BIRTH TO A HEALTHY BABY GIRL, ABC NEWS HAS LEARNED). No real details are available just yet but just this past Monday it was reported that Beatie was due to give birth “within the week” … and BOOM! here we are:

Thomas Beatie, the transgender man who made headlines as the so-called “pregnant man,” gave birth today to a healthy baby girl, ABC News has learned. Born a woman, Beatie, 34, who had his breasts surgically removed and legally changed his gender from female to male, leaped to prominence around the world in April when the wispy bearded man revealed he was pregnant. Despite years of taking hormones and living outwardly as a man, Beatie maintained that he retained his female sex organs because he intended one day to get pregnant. “I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day. I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn’t define who I am,” Beatie told Oprah Winfrey in April. “I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child,” he said. Beatie was impregnated with sperm from a donor. His wife, Nancy, inseminated him at home with a device she said was like a syringe without the needle. They bought it from a veterinarian and it is typically used to feed birds. He has an intact vagina, but he has not yet revealed how he delivered the baby.

Now there’s something you don’t hear about every day. I suppose congratulations are in order for the happy family. Here’s hoping that mother, father/mother and baby are all doing well. Mazel Tov!
