The New ‘Kath & Kim’ Emulates The Old ‘Kath & Kim’

A step in the right direction
August 29th, 2008

NBC has released a new promo pic of Molly Shannon and Selma Blair, in their respective roles as Kathleen ‘Kath’ Darleen Day Knight and Kimberly ‘Kim’ Day Craig, sitting side-by-side in their backyard porch/deck area seeming to emulate the regular closing scene of each ep of the original Aussie version of Kath & Kim … which I think is a very good step in the right direction:

Those familiar with the original Australian version of Kath & Kim know that each ep ends with mother and daughter engaging in a little banter on the back patio (or lanai, if you will) at the close of each episode. It appears that the new US version of the series will be doing the same. This is a good sign, I think. You may recall that we recently got to see new video promos for the show and new pics from filming of the series. All this new Kath & Kim stuff just keeps adding to the anticipation for me. I can’t wait to see this new incarnation of the show … for better or worse, I’m curious as hell. Still no word if the character of Sharon Karen Strzelecki will make it in the new US version … that should determine if NBC has made a fatal error or not.

Nothing about this show has peaked my interest yet. I doubt I’ll watch it.

The character of Sharon will not be in the US version of the show as Magda Szubanski, the characters creator and owner did not allow for it. Instead of Sharon you guys are apparently getting a gay character as Kimmy’s second best friend.

How much is NBC paying you to promote this show?

THERE you are! Lost you after a computer crash and found you again while voting for the Blogger’s Choice Awards! Now I can quit doing without my daily dose of celebrity snark!

I’m glad they’re going to include Kath and Kim’s “wine time” at the end of the show.
But not having Sharon’s character? Boo. She was an intergral part of the show….unlucky in love, accident-prone, sports mad big girl. I don’t think a gay best friend is really Kim’s style. Kim lords it over Sharon and I can’t see her doing that to a gay bff.

I used to watch the aussie version on IFC. It’ll be interesting if the tone of the show translates.

no way no Sharon, this show is going to be awful…as a kiwi I get the Aussie humour and sharon is an integral part to that humour- not a token gay bff that just won’t work … Typical Americans taking a good show and destroying it…

This whole concept should never have happened. :(

NBC isnt paying Trent to talk up the show– he’s a fan of the Australian version therefore he’s hopeful for the US version to be as funny. Derrr.
