This Episode Of ‘Project Runway’ Sponsored By Saturn
Last night’s ep of Project Runway, which challenged the designers to fashion a garment out of some very unlikely materials, was pretty entertaining despite all the product placement. While the ep was VERY CLEARLY a thinly-veiled advertisement for PR sponsor Saturn Automotive, it did provide the contestants with a pretty difficult, IMHO, challenge:

Last night’s ep also featured a very special guest judge (which was a very nice surprise, I might add) in addition to the regularly scheduled guest judge for this particular challenge. After the jump, find out who was in, who was out and who managed to find the drive to step up and shine in the episode titled Fashion That Drives You …

So … I gotta ask … does anyone know what was going on with the accent that the Saturn guy was using? I had a hard time determining if it was British or Irish or just gibberish … it kept driving me nuts, if anyone knows what accent he was using, please let me know. But anyways … Saturn very prominently sponsors Project Runway and they finally managed to weasel their way into the actual show itself. I think the idea of making a garment out of car parts is genius … the overt ad placement, tho, was annoying. I mean, I get it but … meh. I knew that my Detroit homie Motor City Joe was gonna rock out on this challenge … while he didn’t make my fave outfit this time around, I thought he held his own. Suede managed to find new ways to annoy me … if he is seriously trying to make that wackadoodle bullshizz “happen” I may have to stab him in the neck. I can barely stand the licious, please don’t make me have to deal with this new crap saying, too. The funny quote of the night goes to Jerell who said of Terri, “[She's] got two faces and four patterns … that’s it, don’t trust the bitch.” LOLOLOLOL. I howled with laughter at that … and I MUST SAY that Terri really rocked it out last night. I loved her design, I was really surprised it wasn’t in the top 2 to tell the truth. Oh and is *anyone* surprised that Stella is romantically involved with a man named Ratbones? I mean, seriously. I was very happy to see that Laura Bennett, PR season 3 finalist, sat in for Nina Garcia in last night’s ep (perhaps Nina was too preoccupied with other endeavors to film last night’s ep? Hee Hee) Rachel Zoe, celebrity stylist to the stars (and star of her own upcoming Bravo TV show, which only added to the disingenuous feel of last night’s ep), was the proper guest judge but I really loved Laura more … she deffo had more to add to the show than Ms. Zoe. Can I get a WOOT! for Leanne finally winning a challenge … she is the one who is gonna sneak in and possibly win it all, you watch. She is really talented … quiet, but talented. I loved Korto’s seat-belt coat, she could’ve won too but I’m glad that Leanne finally won one. Korto, it seems, is always the bridesmaid, never the bride. It was so time for Keith to take his bellyaching back home to Utah. I get that it may be hard for him to make a name for himself in fashion while living in Utah but I think mebbe he needs to refine his aesthetic a bit more before he makes a serious go of a career in fashion. His bitching thruout the entire ep and during the judging process really showed how inexperienced he really is. He’s not ready yet, I’m glad he got axed from competition last night. It was sew time. Absent all the advertising, I quite liked last night’s ep … it had a very Detroit feel to it … I enjoyed. Next week will feature Diane von Muthaeffing Furstenberg, y’all … I can’t *wait* for that one. So … what did y’all think … did your fave design win the challenge?

Yes! my favorite design of the night was also LeAnn’s! And I totally agree that Terri’s design was kickass- I LOVED the pants! I was shocked that it didn’t get in the top two also. Last nights episode clinched it for me- I am starting to really be a big LeAnne fan!

I have this feeling that Korto is going to win… and not just because we are both Liberian :-). I mean, She’s come in the top 3 for most of the challenges, winning one of them. So to me it seems like she can hold her own no matter what the challenge calls for, as opposed to really only being good with certain ideas, or certain materials.

I’m glad that with this challenge (strangely enough) they finally got up off their asses and designed. I swear, I was an episode away from not watching the rest of this boring ass season and these talentless designers. Exceptions would notable include Terry. She is amazing - wtf isn’t she winning more? While, his whiny mouth and stupid rat tail are a turn off, with Keith’s departure, there is no longer eyecandy. Instead, we’ve nastiness in too many tank tops and shorts (blech). He may have been a mediocre designer, but he was a hot piece of Utah trash trade.

I agree with J to the da. Korto has consistently been in he top three and is not afraid to be daring. Her designs truly are lovely and I’m constantly impressed about how she can do the challenge but still bring her own point of view without letting either side lag.

I loved that you described Rachel Zoe as a “celebrity stylist to the stars.” That may be placed above the Rio Grande River as my favorite redundancy. Jury’s still out.
I love your PR overviews, though. One of my favorite topics covered by my favorite blogger.

Big props to Korto, LeAnna, Terry and annoying lil Suede last night - loved them! Cant understand how Blayne keeps getting past the judges every week - does he really make that good of TV to keep him on? I called something ‘wackadoodle’ in the real world last week and almost slapped myself!

ill miss keith :( staring at him was an added bonus to having project runway back in my life *sigh*
August 28th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
I’m sorry, but Keith’s outfit was nowhere near as bad as Blayne’s. Blayne should’ve gone home this week!

my partner’s english and we’re pretty sure that guy was irish– maybe from the north? maybe been here for hella days? just my two cents. :)

Val - I don’t think that Trent meant “Celebrity stylist to the stars” as a redundancy, but rather that Rachel Zoe is a celebrity in her own right. That she’s a celebrity and a stylist to the stars, not a stylist who serves celebrities that are stars.
Oooooor maybe it was a redundancy. Trent?
August 28th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I did mean that Rachel Zoe is a “celebrity” in her own right and didn’t try for redundancy :)

“It was sew time” ROFL.

Korto is so talented and her coat was fabulous. I was happy to see LeeAnn win. Her dress was cute. I was scared at first when i saw her stuffing the sides. It would have been a disaster for me since i’m a hippy girl, but her model defintely pulled it off. I’m a huge fan of Jerrell’s and Terri. Jerrell had me cracking up also when he said Terri has two faces.

This product placement is irritating the crap out of me. I can deal with the Tresemme Hair Salon and the L’Oreal Paris Make-up Room, but seriously—Saturn, Rachel Zoe, Lipstick Jungle, the Olympics, Sandra Bernhart’s show…STOP!
While Laura always irritated me, I respect her as a designer. She had a hell of a lot more insight than Rachel Zoe. I would have loved to have seen Nina rip Blayne and Keith’s outfits though.
Keith was so irritating. It’s always lame when they blame others for their crappy outfits. He talks about how he’s going to make a structured, tailored outfit, yet the skirt rips when the model sits. And she looked fat. If the model looks fat, there is definitely a problem.

My quote of the ep: (Not sure of the exact words)
When Stella saw her model walking down the runway: “I love it. I’d never do anything like it again though. “
August 28th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
I was so impressed with almost everyone! Even blayne!! Even “licious” wasn’t enough to keep me from liking his dress, or at least admiting that with a different cut, that dress would have been killer! Keith- ugh, So glad he’s gone. LeAnne, her dress was sooo fierce! Korto’s was so beauitful! Jerrel really stepped it up, but he’s either top two or bottom two, have you noticed? I loved Kenley’s, the zebra was cute! I hated Joe’s, I know you love him Trent, but I thought it looked something out of “Fast n Furious”! haha. Suede’s was okay. Stella’s was wack, but LOL at Ratbones!! I was not surprised, but I laughed so hard I had to rewind my TIVO just to listen to the next part. Terri deserved recognition too, but somehow was left out :( I can’t decide who the front runners are, because all of them have won a challenge, or at least been in the top two! I’m going to guess Korto will be one, but who knows? She’s the most consistent but she needs to stop looking like a sourpuss all the time. She never looks happy, even when she wins!
August 28th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
It was deffo time for “Fringe Boy” to get the boot! Man oh man! I was glad to see he didn’t do fringe, but that outfit was really boring. Oh and blaming the model for the hole in the back. Excuse me, but how is she supposed to get her hair and makeup done without sitting? Puh-leze!!!!
Now we just have to get Blayne, Suede and Stella off!
And I thought Leanne’s outfit was too fab for words! I loved the seatbelt frizz at the top! It really added punch to her outfit!

I always catch these episode overviews before I watch the show with my man online the next day. Yes, I love ruining surprises!
Project Runway Australia did an episode almost identical to this in its first season but they were pimping the new Fiat. It’ll be interesting to see how this ep measures up!
P.S. Project Runway Australia has more eff bombs, but it really makes me miss Heidi, Tim, and yes, even Blayne.

re: product placement - don’t forget the copius references to Bluefly.com — ok, we get it already.
August 28th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
At first I was as annoyed by Leanne’s mousy quiet-ness as you are by the ‘licious-ness’ and ‘wackadoodle-ness’……….but I have to say, she is really starting to earn my respect. The girl’s got talent and at this point, I wouldn’t be surprised to see her make it all the way. I really do love Korto and her designs. It cracks me up how she responds to praise from the judges. She just kinda half-smiles and looks away. Like she is sooo bored and can’t wait to get out of there. hahaa.
Top 3, as of now, has to be Leanne, Korto and Terry……maaaaaaaaybe Jerell. We shall see.
Woot woot!

First of all, I’m Irish - only been outta Ireland once (I need a holiday!!) - and that guy is NOT Irish, NOT from Northern Ireland but rather from around the south west of England. It sounds like a Bath accent to me. All I can tell you is he definitely is NOT Irish.
Anyhoo, although I thought Keith was so delicious (I know he’s gay but i can still look, can’t I?!), he’d really gone downhill from winning the challenge two weeks ago. His whining totally took away from his character for me.
I’d have prefered if Korto or Terri won, or even Jerrel.
I think Korto, Leanne and Joe might be top 3. Perhaps Jerrel too.
August 28th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
I hope Korto will be one of the final three. Last few her designs have been my favorites.
August 28th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Dear Michael, Keith was not “trade”. Keith was openly gay and spoke about the difficulties of being homosexual in Utah briefly on the show. Either you missed that, or you don’t know the real meaning of the word ‘trade’. It’s a sad day when gay men no longer know how to use their own venacular.
August 28th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
leanne!!!!!!! ftw!!!!!!!! it was stunning. she’s always had the goods she’s just bringing it!! and (forgive me trent!) ‘wackadoodle’ at least is a bit more original than –licious….which needs to DIE out immediately
August 28th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Is me or this season the models are AWFUL ??… Terrible catwalk and bodies!
August 28th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
GO JOE!!!!
August 28th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Im so glad Stella wasn’t cut, she is one of my favorites. I think in the next challenge she will prove herself more
August 28th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
FINALLY!!!! The show is starting to pick up…I’ve been a loyal follower since minute 1, fyi. I was so glad to see Keith go…he was gettin on my last nerve! His smart-ass comment at the end really grinded my gears, obviously we all know that you’re out when you’re the last one standing, but to throw it back at their faces…you’re burning bridges son! I loved Leanne’s dress…she so deserved to win…it was definitely innovative. Good luck next time Korto!!!
August 28th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
While Korto’s design was pretty nice and pulled-together, I feel like it was a little less innovative than said to be…. http://www.seatbeltbag.com, anyone?
August 29th, 2008 at 2:09 am
SO GLAD LEANNE FINALLY WON!
She has consistently (with the exception of that one time in the bottom two) made me awe-struck and craving her design..
August 29th, 2008 at 2:11 am
Oh, and Jerell’s outfit would actually be my pick for the winner. It was more of an immediate impact on the senses for me than Leanne’s but this was such a great challenge and they really rose to the occasion like Tim said. It was an episode in the classic spirit of Project Runway.
August 29th, 2008 at 6:32 am
Can the Saturn guy perhaps be Scottish? :D
August 29th, 2008 at 7:17 am
I totally started the wackadoodle thing like 2 years a go!!!! he soooo stole that from me!!! && it is wackadoodle that he has to talk in the 3rd person all the time. . . that is not cool. . . but he is not a totally unfortunate designer. . . ie whats his face with “impecable taste” thank god he is gone!!
August 29th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
yay i loved leanne’s too! is it just me or korto always makes those types of tunic-y looking things with poofy sleeves? i’m getting sick of them.
August 29th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
saturn guy sounded scottish born but now working in america to me.
m2c: as someone who has to cast irish versus scot actors all day.
