The Altar of My Choice”

The Altar of My Choice”

“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” — Joshua 24:15 NIV

Reflection

The moment Joshua speaks these words, he stands not just as a leader, but as a witness to the crossroads of a nation’s soul. Israel had seen miracles, wandered in deserts, tasted both mercy and judgment. Now, they were home—but comfort can be a quiet thief of conviction.

Joshua doesn’t plead. He doesn’t manipulate. He simply lays the choice bare: “Choose for yourselves this day…” It’s not a one-time decision made in the heat of emotion. It’s a daily altar, built stone by stone with every act of surrender, every whispered prayer, every refusal to bow to lesser gods.

And then comes the declaration that echoes through generations: “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” It’s not just personal—it’s generational. Joshua stakes his legacy on this choice. He carves it into the identity of his family, like engraving truth into the beams of a home.

Application

We live in a world of endless options—gods of convenience, success, distraction. But the call remains: Choose this day. Not yesterday’s devotion. Not tomorrow’s intentions. Today.

Serving the Lord isn’t always glamorous. It’s often quiet, sacrificial, counter-cultural. But it is always holy. And it is always worth it.

Prayer

Lord, today I choose You again. Not because it’s easy, but because You are worthy. Strip away every idol that competes for my heart. Let my life be an altar of devotion, and my home a sanctuary of Your presence. May my legacy echo Joshua’s words: “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Amen.
