A Dwelling Place in Every Season – A Rock and Fortress

“Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.”

Psalm 71:3 (NIV)

There is something deeply personal and powerful about this verse. It’s not a distant prayer whispered into the wind—it’s a bold cry for shelter, a declaration of trust, and a heartfelt reminder of who God is in every season of life.

The psalmist isn’t asking for a one-time rescue—he’s asking for a place he can always go. Not just in emergencies, not just in crisis, but always. That word stands out. It paints a picture of continuous access to the presence and protection of God.

“Be my rock of refuge…”
This is the cry of someone who knows storms will come, battles will rage, and emotions will rise—but in it all, they need a place to run. And that place isn’t a thing—it’s a Person. It’s the Lord Himself.

The psalmist calls God his rock and fortress. These are images of stability, strength, and safety. A rock is unmoved by waves. A fortress stands secure against attacks. In a world full of change, chaos, and uncertainty, God is your constant anchor.

When life shakes your foundation, He is your firm ground. When enemies surround, He is your defender. He is your refuge when your heart is weary.

Always Accessible

There’s something beautiful about the phrase “to which I can always go.” God doesn’t close His door. He doesn’t put up a “do not disturb” sign. There’s never a time when you’re too broken, too confused, too ashamed, or too weak to run to Him.

He invites you to dwell—not just visit. To rest—not just survive.

Reflection Questions:

  • Have you been treating God as a refuge only in emergencies, or as a daily dwelling place?

  • What situation in your life right now requires you to run to Him for strength?

  • How can you make God your “always” refuge—not just your occasional shelter?

Prayer:

Lord, You are my rock and my fortress. You are my safe place—the one I can always go to. Thank You that You never turn me away. When life feels uncertain or overwhelming, remind me to run to You first. Be my unshakable refuge. Anchor my heart in Your presence today. Amen.
