Random Acts of Kindness: How to Get Started

The idea of carrying out random acts of kindness, or many of them if you really enjoy it and want to do it more often, is a good one. You can do these things without any particular reason behind them other than wanting to do something nice, usually for a stranger, and enjoying the warm feeling you get in return. They can be spontaneous or planned, and they can be grand gestures or tiny ones. What you choose to give your recipient or what you choose to do for them is down to you, but it can be hard to choose where to start. Here are some ideas to help you on your way.

Help Your Neighbors

An easy way to begin is to start close to home and help out your neighbors. We all need to pull together a lot more, now more than ever, and if you can do something good for your neighbors, you will certainly be contributing to the effort.

Some things you can do for them include:

  • Picking up their groceries
  • Cooking for them (baking or a hot meal)
  • Walk their dog or take care of their other pets
  • Write them a kind note or draw them a picture

There are dozens of things you can do. Some you can do anonymously if you prefer, and others will require you to speak to them to ask if they need assistance. You’ll know what’s best in your own situation.

Send a Gift

It’s so exciting to get a gift out of nowhere and for no reason. It shows someone is thinking of you and cares about you, which can brighten up any day, even when you had been feeling down. So imagine how it would feel if you were the one sending gifts, able to change the way someone feels for the better just by carrying out a random act of kindness.

You don’t need to think about this idea too much. If you’re browsing online and see something you know a friend or loved one would like, you can buy it and send it to them (finances allowing, of course; don’t get into debt by being kind). You can set up a subscription box gift with scentmagic.com for them if you want the gift to be ongoing.

Give a Compliment

When you are carrying out random acts of kindness, you don’t have to spend any money at all; you can still do good things for people. Giving a compliment is a great way to be kind, and it will make someone smile. You can, even if you are confident enough, do this for strangers if you want to.

Giving a compliment takes nothing away from you, and it could change someone’s entire life for the better. Plus, it will make you happy when you see their pleased reaction, so it’s a win-win situation.

The key to compliments is, to be honest. If you like the way someone’s hair looks, or you admire a piece of their clothing, or you think they did or said something good, let them know.
